How Child Support Is Calculated In Minnesota

Minnesota law uses a method of calculating child support called "Income Shares." The law has guidelines that use both parents' gross income, the number of children and the cost of raising a child at various income levels.

Child support typically includes the following three parts:

Basic Support
Payments for the costs of a child's housing, food, clothing, transportation, education and other expenses to care for the child (does not include gifts).

Medical Support
Providing health and dental insurance, payments for the costs of health and dental insurance that the other parent provides, and payments for uninsured or non-reimbursable medical and dental expenses.

Child Care Support
Payments for child care (day care) costs when parents go to work or school.

Child support payments are made to the parent with which the child primarily resides. Based on factors such as shared custody, the court can determine a higher or lower sum of payment. There are also other costs that are determined based on child care, medical needs, education and other expenses in raising the child.

We Stay Up-To-Date On Changes To The Law

It's important to keep in mind that the law is subject to change. What may have been the case a decade ago, may not be the case in a few months if the state legislature debates an issue. This is why it's important to contact an attorney from our firm.

Our lawyers stay up-to-date on changes in the law so that we can better resolve family law issues. We believe in protecting our clients' rights and the only way we can do that is by being the most effective counsel we can be.
